Member Sue Cole has just enrolled at the University on a basic intensive 3 month course, Erica. Maybe you'd like to contact her (see members page). Alternatively there is a beginners group who meet each Thursday in Pau for informal free lessons. See…
Hello everyone,
Can anyone recommend a good place for basic French lessons please?
Although John and I are working on his French at home, he would benefit from some more intensive lessons on top. We are currently living in Idron, SE of Pau.
cheers

Hi John. Sorry we won't see you on Tuesday and that you have problems with your ankle. Has it happened since you got here or before? Can't advise about a car as I don't know how long you need one or how much you want to pay. Maybe some other members can advise. I know of a couple of members who are leaving and maybe could sell or even rent you one for a short period. Where are you staying at the moment? (Let me know by private message if you prefer). Maybe I could pick you up and take you to the coffee morning if it was on my way? I laid on some good weather for you, hope you are impressed!

Hi John. Welcome to the sunny south west of France - not! This past week has been exceptionally bad, I have to admit but just the week before we had an Indian summer and I have been photographed sitting in sleeveless tee-shirt on our veranda sipping a glass of bubbly on Christmas Day! So it isn't always like this, don't despair! To answer your questions - if you are free next Tuesday morning there is an Anglophone coffee morning at Philip Ross's where you'd be most welcome to come along and can pay me in cash for your membership fee. You might even meet a fellow Ozzie! (We have 3 at the moment). Go to Philip Ross's page here and on the left under his photo, you can send him a message to find out where he lives (we don't like to reveal private details on the comment wall for security reasons). As regards the English TV and Radio, 5 years ago we used a company called www.french-help.com who were very helpful. I see they are still advertising in this months French Connexion newspaper (which you can find in some supermarkets or subscribe to - very useful regarding life in France for expats). You might like to give the tv people a call first or send an email to find out if a dish would work in your situation. Tel: 05.62.66.08.25 or email englishtvradio@aol.com. They are based in the Gers, just over the border from Pau and were happy to travel here for me. If any other members have other info, I hope they will send you a message. I do hope you can make it on Tuesday, assuming you have wheels? If not, we can work something out regarding joining our Association. Good luck!
Apart from a deep and thorough understanding of the French language - no. Only joking, you'll be fine. We have a small French conversation group who meet once a week (free of charge I believe for paid up Anglophone members) for beginners and intermediates which you may find helpful in lots of ways in the early days. Looking forward to meeting you some time later.
Hi again John. Glad to hear you're coming over soon. Yes, Pau is a beautiful town, also surrounding countryside. We're also near the Pyrenees so if you like skiing or hiking, you'll enjoy that. We are also only about 1.5 hours from the Atlantic coast where there is great surfing to be had and of course the lovely town of Biarritz with the Spanish border close by. So lots to do and see and the natives are friendly! As are we Anglophones! We have a membership of around 100 families and offer lots of activities and events for all ages. You'll find the membership form here on the main page and I hope you will decide to join us shortly. Good luck with the move!
